Card Design Guide

Cards are a versatile and meaningful way to share invitations, announcements, holiday greetings, thank-you notes, and more.

Our custom card designer allows you to personalize your card with your own photos, text, colors, layouts, and decorative design elements.

Available card styles include:

Below, you’ll find helpful guidance for designing your cards, working with safe zones, customizing layouts, and reviewing your final options before checkout.

⚠️ Before You Begin

Once you begin designing your Card, the following selections cannot be changed without starting over:

Card size
Orientation
Corner type
Paper type

Please review these selections carefully before clicking Customize Now.

📘 Choose Your Card Specifications

On the Card product page, select your preferred:

Size (if applicable)
Orientation (if applicable)
Corner type
Paper type

🎨 Begin Designing Your Card

Once you click Customize Now, you’ll enter the card design workspace to begin designing or editing your template.

📤 Upload & Manage Your Photos

The Photos panel gives you access to your image galleries and upload options.

You can upload additional images at any time during the design phase.

Select the gallery you'd like to upload into. Then, click Manage to upload photos from:

Your computer
Google Drive
Dropbox
Google Photos

Photos are uploaded directly into your selected gallery.

The Filter icon allows you to change the view of your gallery. You can view all images within your gallery, the images you haven't used, or the images you have used.

⚠️Your image may appear blurry or pixelated, even if it meets our recommended print dimensions. This is because the image is scaled down to deliver the fastest experience possible to you, but we use your high-resolution file when it's time to print. Please don't worry; there's no reason for concern unless you're receiving a resolution warning.

🔍 Preview Images Before Selecting

When viewing your image gallery, hover over an image thumbnail.

A magnifying glass icon will appear in the top-right corner.

Clicking this icon will:

Open a larger preview of the image
Display the full file name at the bottom of the preview window

This helps confirm you’ve selected the correct image before placing it in your design.

✨ Autofill

Cards support Autofill from the Photos panel.

Unlike Albums or Photo Books, card projects do not prompt Autofill at the start of the design process.

Instead, you may choose to Autofill your design at any point while working in the designer by using the Autofill option within the Photos panel.

🖼 Card Back Layouts

For eligible card products, card back layout options are now managed within the Theme panel.

This allows you to customize both the front design theme and available back-side layout options from one convenient location.

🛠 Design Tools

When designing your Card, you will have a range of design tools at your disposal.

📐 Layouts

Use the Layouts panel to rearrange photos and design elements on your card.

Layouts vary depending on the selected card template.

🎨 Backgrounds

Customize your card’s background appearance using:

Preset colors
Design patterns

You may also use the Pick a Colour tool to visually select a custom background color.

🔤 Text Editing

Edit preloaded card text directly within your design.

You can customize:

Text content
Font style
Text color
Text size

✨ New: Text previously set to auto-size can now be manually adjusted if you'd like more control over your design.

Text color options include:

Preset colors
Pick a Colour custom color selector

🎭 Clipart

Use the Clipart tool to add decorative graphics and design accents to your card.

Clipart includes a variety of categorized artwork for further personalization.

To use Clipart:

Open the Clipart panel
Browse available categories
Select a graphic
Drag it into your card design

🖼 Image Editing Tools

Selecting an image provides additional editing tools.

✋ Pan / Zoom

Adjust the image's position within the frame or zoom to improve placement.

↔ Transform

Resize or reposition image boxes.

You can:

Adjust image box dimensions
Move placement within the design
Fine-tune layout positioning

⟳ Rotate

Rotate your selected image.

🖼 Set as Background

Apply an image as the full card background.

You may also revert the background if needed by clicking Minimize.

⬛ Add Borders

Apply borders to image boxes for added styling.

🗑 Remove Images

Remove images by:

Selecting the image and clicking the Trash icon

OR
Dragging the image off the design until it turns red

📏 Safe Zone & Trim Guidelines

Your card template includes a dotted guideline to help protect important content during production.

Safe Zone

The green or blue dotted line marks the safe zone.

Keep all important text, faces, logos, and design elements inside this area.

Bleed Area

Background colors and images should extend beyond the safe zone into the bleed area.

This helps prevent unwanted white edges after trimming.

Example: Good vs. Bad Setup

✅ Good:
Background images extend fully into the bleed area, and text remains safely inside the safe zone.

❌ Bad:
Images stop short of the bleed area, or text sits too close to the trim edge.

✂️ Trim Information

During production, approximately 0.25 inches total is trimmed from the final card dimensions.

Trim may vary slightly depending on production tolerances.

Because of this:

Keep important text away from edges
Extend backgrounds fully
Avoid edge-critical design placement

Classic Fold & Gate Fold Tips

For folded-style cards, we recommend avoiding designs that wrap continuously from front to back across folds.

For best alignment, we recommend using:

Pre-designed themes
OR
Photo-based layouts designed for folded products

Use Preview to check:

Cropping
Alignment
Spelling
Duplicate images
Empty photo boxes

💾 Save Your Project

Need to come back later?

Click the Save icon in the upper-right corner of the design workspace to save your project and return later.

✨ Review Your Selections: Add-Ons & Finishing Options

Once your card design is complete, click Add to Cart.

Before checkout, a Review Your Selections window will appear.

Available options may include:

✅ Color Correction

Apply professional color correction adjustments to your images.

Click the info icon beside this option to learn what color correction includes and preview a sample comparison image.

✅ Envelopes

Review included envelope options, opt out where applicable, or upgrade eligible selections.

✅ Remove Logo

Predesigned cards include a Nations Photo Lab logo printed on the back by default.

If preferred, you may choose to remove the logo for $5 during this review step.

✅ Gloss UV Coating

Add a glossy protective finish to eligible card products.

Click the info icon beside this option for additional details.

🛒 Add to Cart

Once you’ve reviewed your Card design and add-on options, your Card will be added to your shopping cart.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How many cards come in a pack?

A: Most Press Cards are sold in packs of 25.

Product minimums vary by product type.

Q: Do you provide Photoshop templates?

A: Yes. Photoshop templates are available HERE.

Q: Can I filter card templates?

A: Yes. Click HERE for filtering help.

Q: Do you offer design services?

A: We do not offer full card design services.

However, if you’d like our team to review your design before placing your order, we’re happy to help. Please submit a contact form.

Q: Can I mix multiple designs in one pack?

A: No. Each pack must contain the same design.

Q: Do you offer rounded corners?

A: Yes. Rounded corners are available for eligible card products.

Availability depends on product type.

Q: Can I change the paper type after starting?

A: No. The paper type must be selected before you begin your project.

Changing paper type requires starting a new design.
