Understanding Cropping Options: Crop vs. Fit
When ordering prints, you may notice that parts of your image appear cropped. This happens because your image’s aspect ratio (width-to-height proportion) doesn’t match the selected print size.
If the system simply stretched your image to fill the print area, it would become distorted. Instead, your image is adjusted to fit the selected print size in one of two ways: Crop or Fit.
By default, all prints are produced full-bleed (edge-to-edge), so it’s important to review your crop to ensure your image is framed as expected.
⚠️ Important: Website vs. ROES Cropping Options
Cropping tools differ depending on how you place your order:
-
Website:
- Uses Crop only (full-bleed)
- You can reposition your image, but Fit is not available
-
ROES Desktop Software:
- Offers both Crop and Fit
- You can toggle between the two options before adding to your cart
✅ Quick Reference: Crop vs. Fit
CROP (Website + ROES)
Your image fills the entire print, but some edges may be trimmed to match the print’s shape.
👉 You can click and drag to reposition your image before ordering.
FIT (ROES Only)
Your entire image is shown without trimming, but white borders will appear on two sides.
👉 This option preserves your full image but does not print edge-to-edge on two sides. You can choose to keep or trim the resulting borders.

Helpful Hint:
To print your image full-frame without cropping or borders, choose a print size that matches your image’s aspect ratio.
🎨 Your Options
1. Crop the Image (Website + ROES)
Use this option when you want your image to fill the entire print.
Because prints are produced full-bleed, some cropping will occur if your image ratio doesn’t match the print size.
You can adjust what gets cropped:
On the Website:
- After selecting your image and photo print options (size, paper type, color correction, mounting, linen texture, photo coloration, or photo border), click Next
- On the Order Prints or Edit Print screen, click and drag your image to reposition it
In ROES:
- Click on the image within your template
- Drag to adjust how your image is cropped before adding to cart
2. Fit the Image (ROES Only)
Use this option when you want to keep your entire image visible.
Instead of cropping, the image scales down to fit within the print size. This results in white borders on two sides.
- Toggle Crop/Fit using the button below the template
- “Fit” preserves your full image proportions
- Borders can be trimmed after printing if desired
👉 This option is not available on the website
3. Choose a Different Print Size (Website + ROES)
If you’d like to avoid both cropping and borders, select a print size that matches your image’s original ratio.
Example:
An image with a 2:3 ratio will print full-frame at 4×6, 8×12, or 12×18.
🖼️ Visual Example
The diagram below shows how each option affects your image:
- Crop (Web & ROES): Image fills the frame, some parts are trimmed
- Fit (ROES only): Entire image is shown with two white borders
⚠️ Cropping Adjustment Tip (Website Only)
When working in the print preview or image selection interface, please be cautious when scrolling with your mouse.
If your cursor is positioned over an image thumbnail and you remain hovered for a few seconds, the scroll wheel may begin to adjust that image’s crop instead of moving the page up or down.
To avoid unintentional crop changes:
Position your cursor away from image thumbnails before using your mouse wheel.
Wait a moment after setting or adjusting an image before scrolling.
Always double-check your image placement before adding to the cart or submitting your order.
Our team has implemented a delay to help prevent this from happening immediately, but remaining mindful of your cursor position will ensure your crops stay exactly as you set them.
Additional ROES Information
ROES is a desktop ordering program that connects directly to our lab. It allows you to design and prepare orders offline and only requires an internet connection when submitting your order. It is separate from our desktop website.

So, where do you get the ROES program? Is it already working if I'm using youir site? Do I have do download/access it elsewhere? HELLO!
Hi Kathi! I sincerely apologize for the trouble you are experiencing. This article has been edited to now include more information on what ROES is and includes a link to download ROES. ROES is completely separate from the website and is a system you physically download to your computer. I, or any one of our agents, would be happy to assist you with downloading ROES and accessing the crop or fit option! If you would like this, please let us know the best way to reach you (phone or email) :)
Hello A Dramm!
Thank you for contacting us and providing us with your feedback! It is truly appreciated as we want to be sure our clients are able to navigate through our site and ROES with no issues. I am happy to hear you were able to figure ROES and locate the crop to fit option. Unfortunately at this time this option is not available on the website. However, great news! We are currently working on implementing this feature to the website so that will be coming soon!
In regards to the pricing, whenever we run a sale on any item, the sale prices are valid through ROES and the website. However, if you happened to have ROES open prior to the sale launch, you will not see the sale prices appear unless you restart the system. Or, it could have been a glitch. In this instance, we would recommend clearing the ROES cache. To do this, simply click Home in the upper right corner> Diagnostic Tools in the upper bottom corner> Clear Caches> Choose to Clear Both Caches. ROES will stall for a moment but will shut down, simply reopen the program.
Furthermore, we would be happy to review your order for you. Since sales end midnight PST, we would be happy to honor any sale pricing if your order was submitted within that time frame! Would you be able to send us an email to info@nationsphotolab.com with your order number? You can add ATTN Soojin in the subject line!
