As printer technology and photography-sharing methods evolve, the need for traditional printing techniques like back printing diminishes, aligning with modern preferences and practices in photography.
What is back printing?
Back Printing refers to the information printed on the reverse side of your photo print(s). Our system will print the order number and a sort number on the backside of your photo print(s) as a standard.
Why doesn't Nations Photo Lab offer back printing?
Photo back printing, the practice of printing details or notes on the back of photographs, has become outdated for various reasons.
Nations Photo Lab prioritizes photo product quality. Through market research, we know that many photographers and consumers prioritize the front of the photograph for its visual impact, and back printing can detract from the overall look of the print. Back printing is similar to a typewriter application, which can show through the lighter parts of the image. Most photographers prefer to keep the back of photographs clean and unobtrusive. We have had to provide back printing removal instructions to customers, which we achieved with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol.
As technology has advanced, we have had to prioritize printers that continue to help us and our customers' photography look their best. Because of this, back printing cannot be our priority. Some of our small format printers will lightly print identifiers on the back of the prints. However, our printers and processes have advanced so much that we can no longer offer this service consistently. Back printing was initially used for copyright information. Even now, with watermarks and logos, Nations Photo Lab assumes that when customers order from us, they own the image copyright in accordance with our terms & conditions.
As our business has grown, back printing requests have dramatically decreased. Nations Photo Lab’s systems and technology provide our photographers with a "Pack Card" in the packaging of their order with identifying information like a Pack ID or Item ID that matches a QR Code. The same ID is an identifier in our internal systems to ensure customers receive what they ordered. The value of this "Pack Card" and how we can further enhance our systems for the customers' benefit outweigh the need for continuing back printing. To succeed within the photography industry, Nations Photo Lab prioritized order accuracy through the "Pack Card,” especially in a growing digital printing market where back printing is unavailable.
